Color Me Badd is Keeping the Faith

from Big Bopper magazine's September, 1992 issue
(published in June)

Bryan, Mark, Sam and Kevin are proud of their deep religious beliefs, and the singers of "Slow Motion" are eager to share their spiritual views with you!

As you look at Color Me Badd perform in their exciting music videos, listen to them sing tunes from their hit LP C.M.B on the radio and watch the guys accept awards for their music on TV, it's remarkable to think just how far they've come!

It's hard to believe that just a few short years ago Bryan Abrams, Mark Calderon, Sam Watters and Kevin Thornton were struggling singers, sleeping on the living room floor of their manager's apartment and barely making ends meet!

But the single most important thing that not only helped them get through their lean years but which the guys also credit as the key to their current success is their strong religious beliefs! "God has definitely blessed us," explains brown-eyed Mark. "I love God very much, and without Him we wouldn't be here -- so we thank Him very much!"

The four fellas from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, all share the same commitment to spiritual matters, a fact that not only helps Color Me Badd stick together through tough times, but which also keeps them down-to-earth now that they've hit the big time!

Praying together

"Yeah, we all have a really strong faith in our own way," confides Bryan, who was born on November 16, 1969. "We join together to pray before every performance. We take turns leading the prayer." But Color Me Badd's thankfulness to a higher power doesn't apply only to their booming music career.

"I recently went for a late night walk on the beach by myself," recalls Mark, "and as I was watching the waves as the stars were coming out, I just thought to myself, 'You know, there is a God out there because the world is just so beautiful.'"

Despite the fact that each of the CMB members is devout, one of their bandmates is known as being the most religious. "We call Sam 'The Rev," reveals Mark. "He's the one who usually brings out the Bible first."

But even though Bryan, Mark, Sam and Kevin feel very strongly about their faith, they want you to know that they are only being honest about their feelings, not trying to preach!

"So many good things have happened to us that just can't be coincidence, so, yeah, we have a lot of faith in God," comments Kevin. "But we don't try to force our opinions on anyone else. We believe that everyone has a choice in what they want to believe, or not believe in. This is just how we choose to live."
